Knee
Pain Symptoms
A
woman went to her doctor and said, "Doctor, I have been having severe
knee pain for 2 weeks now and it is not getting better. The doctor
furrowed her brow as she looked at the patient and said, "Well, tell me
your knee pain symptoms."
"My
pain symptoms?" the woman asked. "My symptoms are my knee hurts, really
bad, Doc. How many years of medical school did you say you had? Sheesh!"
This
humorous story illustrates the different kinds of thinking that doctors
and their patients often have. The patient makes the appointment to see
her licensed health professional due to the pain and possible swelling
of the knee (or even inflammaton of the surrounding ligament
--
the anterior cruciate ligament.)
Of
course, the patient can think of one thing and one thing
only: pain relief; while the doctor is trying to figure out
the
cause of the pain, the conditions that limit the mobility of the joint,
and whether or not the condition was due to an injury, or possibly a
disease like osgood schlatter disease.
According
to the Mayo
Clinic, one
of the
main causes of knee pain is rheumatoid arthritis.
It's an auto immune disease that causes inflamation of the
joints. Auto immune diseases happen when the body mistakenly attacks.
itself, thinking that it's attacking invaders of the body. It is a
chronic condition that might seem to go away for years, but doctors
say, actually remains latent even if there are periods of inactivity.
Osteoarthritis
can be an even more painful condition because the bones at the end of
the shin and the start of the knee actually rub together. Arthritis
conditions, in general, may cause swelling
and inflammation. A doctor
might prescribe anti inflammatory medication or nonsteroidal
medication. They both have health risks, so the doctor needs to know
which is more dangerous for that particular knee pain patient. .
It
is understandable that the patient can become impatient (pun intended),
when she is seeking pain management, or even ideally, total pain
relief,
while the doctor or other licensed health professional takes time to
review health risks, or tries to see significance into the actual cause
of the knee
pain symptoms. After all, just like the gal in the story
above, her knee hurts and she just wants it to stop.
Everyone
needs to remember that a proper diagnosis, especially medical advice
diagnosis, is worth the time and effort it takes so that the doctor can
come up with the most appropriate medical treatment. Prescription pain medications
may make the pain go away (or at least prevent you from feeling it) for
as long as the medication is in effect, but that comes with a number of
very painful price tags.
In all likelihood,
hundreds
of millions of people around the world have gone through (or are
currently dealing with) debilitating addictions to pain medications. This sadly, has
resulted in, no doubt, massive numbers of deaths. Taking the wrong
course of
action for treating your knee
pain symptoms can have dire consequences. The fact is, all
drugs are toxic and they all have contraindications and side
effects -- (often very dangerous, even life threatening side effects.)
This
includes over the counter medications as well prescription
pharmaceuticals. More than sixteen thousand people a year die
from a reaction to aspirin,
and other NSAID painkillers, often when using the prescribed dosage
level. Other types of non prescription pain medication, like acetaminophen are just as harmful,
if not more so. Irrepairable damage to the liver and other
vital organs occur on a daily basis.
The Food and
Drug Administration is creating new guidelines and warning requirements
for (only some)
of the manufacturers, but that is not going to change the fact that the
more you use pain medications, the least effective and more dangerous
they become -- and that larger dosages are required to get any relief
from pain -- while the duration of their time of effectiveness
continually diminsihes.
It's
a terrible combination. You need more medication and they work for
less time. If you take more than two doses of many types of these
over the counter pain drugs, within 24 hours, you are
creating an
alaming health risk for yourself. So give your doctor a break
if
she isn't like most doctors who simply reach for the prescription pad
to dole out drugs and get you out of the office.
Choosing
to get away from drugs can not only preserve the quality of your life,
but it can be a literal life saver. That is why there is such a strong
trend these days to seek out health professionals who offer
ointment for pain relief and other
alternatives
to drugs for dealing with knee
pain symptoms, and pain in general.
